The images come from the University of Texas Bookstore ( http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps / ams / france_100k /) and have been georeferenced by us.

The compressed files for download contains the World (.jpw) file and the ArcGis .aux file. Projections used being old or rare, you must read the instructions for use at the bottom of this page. In the list of downloads it is indicated the projection of the map. Refer to the corresponding paragraph at the bottom of the page to learn how to use the georeferenced image.

Another important cartographic set of maps can be found at David Rumsey Map Collection . You will need to download the maps and georeferencing yourself. On this page you will find the link to articles that will tell you the procedure to follow.

Maps of the main French port cities in 1942-1944 at 1/5 000 – 1/10 000

Unlike the previous maps, the scale of the maps does not allow an exact georeferencing from the coordinates present on the map. Indeed, the inaccuracy of the time (100-200m) is no longer “acceptable” today. The georeferencing of the following maps was done from the current IGN orthophotograph, with between 100 and 200 calibration points, then processed by a spline fit. The files are in jpeg2000 format. The projection used is the Lambert 93.

How to use Lambert I referenced images with ArcGis

Projection settings

The downloaded files contain the ArcGis .aux file with the definition of the Lambert I projection.
WARNING !: This is not the same projection that comes standard with ArcGis.
If you want to apply it to other layers, either you import the projection of one of the provided maps, or you modify the projection parameters provided as standard:

In ArcGis projections, select the NTF Lambert Zone I projection
Double click on it to edit the settings
Change the False_Northing setting from 1200000 to 200000

Setting up the transformation

For this part, you will use the files provided as standard without any modification. If you work in Lambert I, II, II, IV or II extended, you will not have to implement a transformation because the maps are referenced with the same geodesic system (NTF: New French Triangulation). If you are working in Lambert 93 or CC, when loading a map into a project already containing data, you will get the message:
